Description
The Faro a Colon (Columbus Lighthouse) is an imposing monument of questionable architecture in the eastern suburbs of Santo Domingo that was built in homage to Christopher Columbus.
It was inaugurated on October 6, 1992 (after six years of work) to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas. It is a mausoleum that houses the remains of Christopher Columbus, a dispute exists over this with Spain which claims to hold the remains of the famous navigator in the cathedral of Seville.
The Faro a Colon is also a museum dedicated to Latin America where you can discover many objects from Latin American countries and the world.
Inside you can discover many rooms (poorly lit), each dedicated to a different country such as Uruguay, Mexico, Brazil ...
At the main entrance of the monument, the flags of all the countries of America symbolize the brotherhood between nations and the union of the different races, cultures and religions that inhabit the Earth.
The Faro a Colon is a gigantic Christian cross-shaped building that is not to everyone's liking due to its concrete architecture, it is said to be over 200 meters long by around 60 meters wide and 31 high (we have to check because on the internet there are all sizes !!!).
It is also a lighthouse (as its name suggests) which sends a very powerful light beam in the shape of a cross in the sky of Santo Domingo (which has been off for a few years).
It is one of many places to visit in Santo Domingo. It is located next to the cave Los Tres Ojos. The nearest hotels are the Tropicana, the Acuarium Suite Resort and the Hotel Victor.

No interest. Located in a dangerous zone. Do not go without being accompanied by police.
