Description
The Great Lagoon at Nagua is a humid, freshwater coastal area located in the community of Boba, north of the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
It is formed by the Boba and Bacuí rivers, and a series of canals such as Zanjón, Los Lebranchos, la Graza, among others. It has an area of 15.4 km square, of which 4.5 km are covered with mangroves.
It is a refuge for wildlife where tall palm trees combine with mangrove swamps, as well as the freshwater lakes that lie inland mix with the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
La Gran Laguna is one of the main ecological zones of the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez and a destination that deserves to be considered in the tourist route along the coast of the Costa Verde which is covered with lush vegetation . It is an ecosystem where the species of red mangrove, black mangrove and white mangrove are preserved and whose natural conditions correspond to those of tropical forest and marine coastal forest. There is also an area of coastal dunes over a meter high.
The fauna of the Gran Laguna in Nagua:
The fauna includes 30 species of fish, 8 of crustaceans, 21 species of birds and 11 species of flowers. About 250 families live around the lagoon and 70% of these live from fishing. It was declared a protected area in 1995, mainly to prevent overfishing which threatens fish species in the lake area.
In 2010, the Gran Laguna was renovated as an ecotourism destination and opened to the public. Currently it is possible to take boat trips, horseback riding and eat traditional seafood dishes.
