Description
The Chepa cave is located in the town of Bayaguana
(province of Monte Plata), at a height of 249 meters above sea level. Geologically, it is part of the Haitises formation, the most important karst on the island of Hispanola and the Caribbean. In its vicinity, several streams gush out that form the flow of the Comatillo and Comate rivers.
Chepa Cave is made up of several rooms and a network of tunnels that extend in total for about 500 meters and in which stalactite formations abound.
It has natural conditions where the plant exuberance, the warm temperature of the external environment, the abundance of water and high relative humidity are combined. These conditions make the cave the scene of great biological activity, with an abundant and curious fauna that thrives in ecosystems that are well differentiated from each other.
Cave fauna:
The fauna is mainly composed of bats and cave swallows, with both populations reaching several thousand specimens. The bat population lives in the darkest area of the cave. The swallows inhabit the part closest to the entrance, which is the lightest and most ventilated area, ideal as a habitat for these small birds.
Populations of other organisms depend on both the populations and the activity and energy they bring to the cave. Arachnids, beetles, and guanobios depend on the droppings and leftover fruit and seeds that bats bring from outside. Likewise, arachnids, annelids and beetles depend on the mosses and algae that grow thanks to the light of the ecosystem in which the swallow is found and the eggs and chicks of these.

The cave is located not far from Salto Alto about 10.5 miles north of Bayaguana and 50 of Santo Domingo.
