Description
Nalga de Maco National Park (Toad Butt) is a protected area with an area of approximately 280 square kilometers, located in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, at the western end of the Cordillera Central area. It is made up of two mountain ranges covered in the southwest by the only dwarf forest on the island of Hispaniola.
The colorful clouds and mists that spread between the treetops block light from the earth, reducing the growth of flora. On the acidic soil of this zone, heavy and heavy showers abound which keep the soil saturated with water. Weather conditions and altitude generally keep the temperature low all year round within 10 ° C.
Nalga de Maco National Park has forests that have never entered human presence due to its difficult access and have remained completely intact. Yet it is possible to enjoy its surroundings and its magnificent natural conditions taking as a reference the community of Rio Limpio, a town of incomparable beauty which is accessible by a small road which is derived from the international road from the city of Restauracion in the province of Dajabon. You can also access this community by following the road from Santiago de los Caballeros, Santiago Rodríguez-Mao and after Loma de Cabrera to Rio Limpio. Access to the hill of Nalga de Maco is possible only on foot or on the back of a mule or horse, by a steep and narrow path and walking part of the road.
In addition to the upper part of the hill, the park offers the possibility of enjoying the cool waters of the Artibonito river, which originates from the nature reserve. The Artibonito River is the largest river system in the island of Santo Domingo.
