Description
Laguna de Oviedo is the second largest saltwater lagoon in the Dominican territory with its 27 km2 (the first is Laguna Cabral), 3 km in diameter and less than 1 m in average depth. It is located on the south coast of the Dominican Republic, in the Jaragua National Park in the province of Pedernales.
The surface is characterized by a milky appearance due to the concentration of minerals and plant and marine waste, the remains of algae and molluscs present in the bottom.
Its hypersaline waters contain three times the concentration of salt found in the sea. Inside are more than forty geographic formations of volcanic and sedimentary origin, including more than twenty sandbanks and islets.
Due to its exceptional geographical and natural conditions, the Laguna de Oviedo is probably the best place for the contemplation of birds and other species native to the dry forest of the Dominican Republic. Its more than forty islands and islets provide shelter and nesting sites for a total of seventy species of birds between permanent and migratory species. Most of these birds are very beautiful aquatic species, including flamingos, pelicans, herons and other yaguazas and crowned pigeon.
Among the reptiles that inhabit the lake you can see the rhinoceros iguana and the ricordi iguana. In the nearby beaches, we see at times, nesting turtles. In the waters of the lagoon you can also find several species of fish, in particular the titaco, a fish endemic to this nature reserve.
The Lagoon of Oviedo is a natural destination of exceptional beauty with the color of its waters and the seabirds that move in flocks. Excursions are made where you can enjoy the beauty of this ecotourism paradise and learn about the natural values and their ecological importance.
