Lake Enriquillo is a protected area in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. It is the largest natural lake in the West Indies and one of the best places in the world for ecotourism
. It is a salty lake that does not have a natural outlet to the sea, which together with the low rainfall in the region and natural evaporation make the water three times the level of salinity found in the region. sea. With a relative area of about 375 km2 and a depth of 29 meters, Lake Enriquillo is almost 40 m below sea level, making it the lowest point in the Caribbean.
Named after the rebel Taino Enriquillo, who in the 16th century led the first revolt of the New World social claim. At the entrance to the lake there is a natural sulfur basin whose sulfur-rich waters have healing properties. The region of Barias around the lake is also an area of exceptional natural beauty, it is where fresh water springs are born.
The vegetation that surrounds the lake is a dry forest with an abundance of desert plants, cacti and iguanas of medium and large size, such as the rhino iguana and the Ricordi iguana.
Inside the lake you can see the American crocodile in the wild, it is one of the largest concentrations of this species in the wild world. Among the birds, the most impressive and colorful flamingos with vivid colors that move in flocks.
Daily excursions are conducted to Enriquillo Lake by boat to appreciate the flora and fauna that thrives. Most of them lead to Cabritas Island, an amazing wildlife reserve where you can see in all its splendor and beauty the natural conditions of this ecotourism paradise of the Dominican Republic.
