Description
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is located in the center of the town of Concepcion de La Vega. It is a religious building whose architectural design combines Byzantine art with modern architecture in an effort to symbolize the spiritual relationship with the Creator God.
Construction began in 1977 and finished in 1992. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception came to replace the old cathedral which had been founded in 1900 and after being severely damaged by an earthquake in 1974 which was demolished. br>
The first of this parish are the triple arches of its doors, along the lines of those of the engraving La Virgen de Cristóbal Colón, which was worn by the victor on his first voyage to the New World. The walls of the cathedral form large asymmetrical cylindrical columns, with a part convex and concave outwards and inwards, which symbolize man's relationship with sin and the state reached after regretting. He also assumes that the gray color of the walls represents the limited human capacity to accommodate the grace of God. Another attraction of the architectural structure of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the bell tower which is made up of three bells which are driven by computer equipment.
Inside the cathedral, the nave has a capacity of 900 to 1000 people. Most impressive of the majesty of the interior is the Risen Christ over 15 feet tall, which originates from the lower part of the temple, the cathedral is one of the few churches with a crucified Risen Christ instead. The temple has a mahogany roof, with a curtain symbolizing the clouds of the sky and has lights that simulate a starry sky. On the altar there are two smaller natural skylights, one representing the great sun, and one representing the moon.
The designers decided to adopt the symbolism represented by the number twelve in the Bible. Thus, the number of doors, stained glass, each group separately twelve tribes of Israel as the doors of the temple of Solomon and the twelve apostles.
The cathedral is one of the most impressive buildings in the city of La Vega. It is one of the most important and most visited religious destinations in the country for domestic and foreign tourists.
