Description
Saona Island is the largest island in the Dominican Republic. It belongs to the province of La Romana and is part of the National Park of the East Cotibanama. Its natural beauty, its beautiful beaches and the characteristics of semi-depopulated, make the island a great tourist attraction in the Dominican Republic, so most of the tourists who go to Punta Cana/Bavaro, Cap Cana will visit the island of Saona with the many excursions that leave to visit this paradise island. It contains two small villages made of colorful fishermen's houses which must not exceed 500 inhabitants.
The Spanish first visited the island in 1494 when Christopher Columbus returned from his journey of exploring Cuba. At that time, the island was called Adamanay in Tainos and Columbus named this island Sabona in honor of his friend and traveling companion Miguel de Cunneo. The transformation of this original name to the current name of the island.
In its 110 km2, the island of Saona has the best underwater formations of the Dominican coast with coral reefs, ideal for diving. In its interior forests, mangroves, and coastal lagoons there is a great diversity of species of birds and reptiles, as well as caves dating from pre-Columbian times, the most famous, Cotubanama, named after the Taino Cacique in the 16th century who decided to take refuge on the island, fleeing the massacres of the conquistador Oviedo, he was captured and executed there. It also has an area called the "natural pool", an area with water so clear that you can see aquatic species that inhabit the seabed. It is therefore an ideal place to observe wildlife or aquatic species such as flamingos, starfish in their natural habitat.
It is also home to endangered species of turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales and manatees. It has facilities like toilets and showers and lunch tables for tourists visiting the island.
