Description
Duarte Park is the largest park in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros and one of the most important in the Dominican Republic.
The current space was originally a Place d'Armes, built in colonial times and located opposite a temple dedicated to Our Lady of the Mercedes, which was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1842 and is now called the Santiago Apostol Cathedral.
The Place d'Armes was not transformed into a leisure park in 1884 to meet the need for a space to serve recreational and cultural activities for the locals who visit it on weekends. At first it was called the Central Park or Recreation.
Park Duarte is surrounded by a galvanized iron fence which is over a hundred years old, and has survived several processes of remodeling the recreation area. They were imported from England in 1883 and given as a gift to the inhabitants of Santiago by the Spanish trader José Batlle Filba in recognition of those who saved from a fire in 188 the property of his company, located near the park.
The interior gardens consist of trees, lanterns and benches which make this place an ideal place to stroll, enjoy with family or friends and relax.
In the vicinity of the Park, in addition to the Santiago Apostol Cathedral, which is the most important in the city, is the Palace of Consistorial de Santiago, which houses the Regional Ministry of Culture, which hosts artistic and cultural activities, and a few meters away, the Cultural Center of Santiago, one of the most important cultural centers of the city, which houses one of the most important theaters in the area.
