Description

The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration is the symbol of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. It is located in the city center, close to the best hotels, bars and restaurants in the city, it is the ideal place to start discovering Santiago. When visiting the city, it is probably the first building you will see, as it is strategically located at the entrance to the province.

The monument was built in the year 1953, for the centenary of Dominican Independence, by order of dictator Trujillo as a monument in his honor, and it was called at the time Monument to the Peace of Trujillo. After the death of the tyrant, in 1961, the name was changed to the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, which it has kept until today, and to honor those who fought to return to the sovereignty of the Dominican Republic between 1863 and 1865 after the annexation of Spain.

The monument, seventy meters high and built partly in marble, it was designed by Henry Gazon Bona. It is located on a hill, it is considered the center of the province of Santiago. At its peak, stands a statue of great proportions called "The Angel of Peace". Its five levels are decorated with statues and murals commemorating the Spanish painter Vela Zanetti, on the theme of the Restoration War and other elements that exalt the Dominican identity.

The lower floors are a museum for the Dominicans and are interesting not only for the paintings, murals and sculptures that are on display, but for its own interior design and decoration based on a series of cornices and chest in keeping with all the work, complemented by elegant Ionic style columns and marble floors and plinths in addition to the famous rock crystal lamps. On the upper floors there is a library open to the public and a terrace which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros.

In 2008, the building underwent a renovation process in addition to site maintenance, new entertainment options and upgrades. Three new squares were built with topics related to the local culture, such as for the villa's baseball team, the customs trade that stimulates the province or the great writers who were born in the city. The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration in Santiago is surrounded by lush green gardens and parks, comfortable places offering visitors leisure, concerts are performed regularly and artistic and cultural activities in the open air. One of the attractions that you can see if you visit this Monument is the possibility of taking a ride through the city in horse-drawn carriages.
