Description
The Guacaras (cave in Taino language) are a series of ancient caves in the surroundings of Cotui, province of Sánchez Ramírez, which were occupied by the indigenous Tainos. These are archaeological remains of great importance for the island of Hispaniola and for the Dominican Republic.
In the area there are several caves in this area such as the Guácara del Comedero, the Guacara del Lago or Cueva de las Golondrinas is a very pretty cave that is located in the lake of the Hatillo dam, it is accessible only by boat or canoeing.
These caves are decorated with hieroglyphs and petroglyphs that describe the habits and customs of this people who have now disappeared. During the various explorations carried out, bones were found in some caves which were probably used as burial places.
The Guacaras of Cotui are among the places to visit even if you are not an archaeologist. The province of Sánchez Ramírez has the largest number of taino caves in the entire Dominican Republic.
