Description
The Fortress San Felipe de Puerto Plata is located on a small hill (Puntilla del Malecón), it protected the entrance to the bay of Puerto Plata from invaders in colonial times (English, Dutch and French).
It was built in 1577 by the Spanish conquistadors, it is also known under the name "El Morro de San Felipe". Over the centuries it has also served as a prison, especially during the Trujillo dictatorship. Today it is a museum that traces the important history that this fortress had in the history of the Dominican Republic.
In this museum visitors can see cannons, ancient weapons as well as secret rooms that were probably used to torture prisoners. It is one of the most imposing fortresses in the Caribbean with huge ramparts.
