Description
La Isabela National Historical and Archaeological Park (Puerto Plata) are the remains of the first city built by Europeans on the American continent during colonization.
It was in this community that about 1,500 settlers settled during Christopher Columbus’s second voyage to the Americas. History says that the city was quickly abandoned because of the many cyclones there would have been at that time. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that this ancient city was rediscovered, studied and rehabilitated because this place has a great archaeological and cultural heritage for the Dominican Republic.
The national park shelters the ruins of houses, the admiral's house, traces of huts, a church, a cemetery ... A church was rebuilt in place of the first Catholic church in the Americas. The museum houses many historical pieces that have been found during the various excavations that have been made on the site.
