Description
Cotubanama National Park is located in the east of the Dominican Republic, between Bayahibe and Boca de Yuma. It is an area of 42,000 hectares protected since 1975 which contains a large terrestrial and marine biodiversity with mangroves (bay of las Calderas), more than a hundred species of birds, some of which are endemic to the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. , terrestrial (Solenodonte and Jutia) and marine (manatee and dolphins) mammals, plants and trees.
Due to its archaeological composition, flat terrain made up of rocks of marine origin, the Eastern National Park has many caves and springs. These caves were inhabited by the Taino, it is possible to visit some of them and see, in addition to stalactites and stalagmites, Taino pictograms and petroglyphs. Padre Nuestro is an archaeological and ecotourism trail that allows you to discover the flora of the park and access the submerged caves, sources of fresh water in the region. Padre Nuestro's visit is from Bayahibe and costs 300 pesos.
Saona Island is part of the national park, so it is also a protected area, it also contains an important marine biodiversity, crustaceans, fish, coral reefs and algae that evolve in clean water. The absence of industry and large villages in the proximity of the park allow to maintain a very good quality of water in this part of the Dominican Republic.
Many excursions to the National Park del Este are available and are accompanied by guides. These excursions are available in most hotels in Bayahibe, all-inclusives in Punta Cana Cap Cana, hotels in La Romana, Santo Domingo....
To visit the National Park of the East (Cotubanama) you have to bring basketballs (avoid flip-flops), mosquito repellent, water, a flashlight to visit the caves, swimsuit and sunscreen.
