Description
Los Haitises Park is one of the Dominican Republic's ecological attractions. Los Haitises National Park is located in the northeast of the country, it stretches south of Samana Bay, from Sanchez to Sabana de la Mar.
The landscape, dotted with small islands, with wooded hills contrasts with the rest of the country.
The park is a protected area with a large mangrove swamp, a maritime part with the bay of San Lorenzo and a land part consisting of a humid subtropical forest with many small hills. In this park are also many caves (La Linea, Cueva de la Arena...) with pictograms and petroglyphs left by the Tainos, the first inhabitants of the island of Hispaniola.
It is a reserve and a sanctuary for many species of birds, fish, crustaceans... some of which are endemic to the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
You can visit the park by boat, starting from Sabana de la Mar and Samana. Excursions are organized from hotels in Las Terrenas, hotels in Samana and Las Galeras. It is one of the main tourist sites of the Samana Peninsula.
- The mangrove:
The mangrove of Los Haitises Park is the largest mangrove in the Caribbean, it is made up of a maze of pink mangroves and white mangroves. The mangrove is the breeding ground for many species of fish, where the fry can grow up sheltered from predators. - The forest:
The park's forest is a humid subtropical type forest with flora typical of tropical regions. Trails are available to visit this forest and discover the richness of the flora and fauna of this reserve. With luck it is possible to see the smallest mammal, the solenodont, snakes ... and especially many birds. - The caves:
The caves of Los Haitises National Park have served as habitats for the Tainos, some of which can be visited (you must not use flash to take the photos because this damages the drawings left by the Tainos). La Reyna, La Línea, La Arena, San Lorenzo, San Gabriel, Cueva Fun Fun... are some of the caves in the park. The first studies of rock art in the park date back to 1869, but despite great wealth and variety, no detailed scientific study has yet been carried out.
