Juan Bautista P. Rancier National Park, also known as Valle Nuevo, in Constanza
, is one of the sites with the greatest potential for the development of ecotourism and mountain sports in the Dominican Republic, in because of the richness and variety of its biodiversity and natural beauty. It consists of a series of mountainous valleys from which several rivers in the Dominican territory flow.
The Valle Nuevo park area is over 2200 meters above sea level, making it the highest plateau in the Caribbean. These conditions result in temperatures not exceeding 20 ° C.
In winter, temperatures often drop below 5 ° C and even to temperatures below zero, and the minimum temperature record is -8 ° C. In the region there were many frosts.
The park covers an area of 910 square kilometers, belonging mainly to the province of La Vega, but also to the province of Monsenor Nouel, San José de Ocoa and Azua. It is located about 15 kilometers from the city of Constanza. In this protected area, 66 species of birds, 48 species of butterflies, 29 species of reptiles, 17 amphibians, and several species of mammals have been reported. There were also 531 species of plants, divided into 103 families and 347 genera. Some 138 of these species are endemic to the island of Hispaniola.
Truck safaris take you through the park, starting with the nearby town of Constanza. The first stop of the tour is the monument of General Francisco Caamano, national hero who was shot in these legendary mountains. Then, following the Caribbean Alps, comes the famous Pyramids of Valle Nuevo, built in honor of Trujillo.
