Description
Isla Cabritos and Lake Enriquillo National Park is located in the southwest of the Dominican Republic between the mountains of Bahoruco and Neyba. It is part of the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve approved by UNESCO.
It is the largest saltwater lake in the Caribbean, it is 40 meters below sea level and the salinity is double that of sea water. The whole area is quite dry, there is little precipitation therefore the vegetation is mainly composed of plants that live in dry subtropical forests like the cactus.
Isla Cabritos and Lake Enriquillo National Park is home to many species of birds, some of which are migratory. Lots of pink flamingos, gray herons and many other species that delight ornithologists who come from all over the world to observe this very varied birdlife.
The park is also home to the largest colony of American crocodiles in the West Indies and two species of iguanas (rhinoceros and ricord). There are also lizards and amphibians.
The main tourist attraction of the national park is Cabritos Island where visitors can observe crocodiles and iguanas. This whole part of the Dominican Republic is not very touristy because it is very far from the major tourist centers of Punta Cana Cap Cana, Bayahibe, Puerto Plata, Samana and Santo Domingo. However, it is a very enriching and very uninteresting excursion which fascinates lovers of nature and ecotourism.

The park is over 155 miles from Santo Domingo, over 248 from Punta Cana and Santa Barbara de Samana.
