Description
La Caleta Underwater Park is the first underwater park in the Dominican Republic. It is a protected area that is home to many corals, fish, crustaceans where divers from all over the world come to admire the seabed. Wrecks were deliberately sunk in order to recreate an ecosystem favorable to the development of the various species that inhabit this area.
In the year 1970 bones of pre-Columbian natives were discovered, at first scientists carried out excavations and archaeological research then in 1974 the president of the time inaugurated the park of La Caleta for tourist purposes, scientific and educational.
The park is located about 12 miles from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, just before Las Américas airport, at the highway tollbooth. There is a small beach with a few fishing boats. The surroundings of the park are abandoned with the remains of what was a park with an artificial lake in the 1970s.
