Higuey - Dominican Republic

Higuey is the capital of the province of La Altagracia, east of the Dominican Republic. The city was founded as a borough in 1505 by Spanish conquistador Juan de Esquivel, after defeating the seat of the chiefdom in the region.

Higuey is located in the province which has the largest tourism development in the country where tourism has replaced agriculture and livestock, as essential economic activities. In its vicinity is the tourist resorts of Bavaro - Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Boca de Yuma and the National Park Del Este. The city has a few small hotels, all-inclusive complex are located in Punta Cana and some all-inclusive in Bayahibe Dominicus.

Higuey, the Basilica of Our Lady of La Altagracia, is a pilgrimage site for the Dominicans and foreigners, especially Haitians. It is a city with an important trade, economic and toursim development.
