Mild weather all year round, ideal for lazing around in the sun
The Samana Peninsula is located in the northeast of the Dominican Republic, about 2 hours by road from Santo Domingo, the administrative and economic capital of the country.
The main cities are Santa Barbara de Samana (capital of the province), Las Terrenas, Las Galeras, Sanchez and El Limon. The whole peninsula enjoys a warm tropical climate among the rainiest in the country with more than 200 days of rain per year (note: this does not mean that it rains all day long, a small storm of 5 minutes counts as 1 day of rain).
The peninsula is wedged between Samana Bay to the south and Escocesa Bay to the north, there are some of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic such as playa Rincon in Las Galeras, Coson beach in Las Terrenas, Punta Popy in Las Terrenas, Morron, Fronton... and many more.
Vegetation is abundant thanks to the high rainfall but the native forests have been almost entirely replaced by permanent crops such as coconut, rubber, coffee and cocoa.
The best season to go to Las Terrenas, Las Galeras or Samana on vacation is from December to April, which corresponds to the least rainy months. At this time of year, temperatures are cooler (between 21°C and 27°C on average) and rainfall is lower. This period also corresponds to winters in the northern hemisphere, when more tourists want to go to the sun.
It is the high tourist season during which thousands of tourists from all over the world come to the peninsula to enjoy the sun and the sea
Officially the hurricane season is from June to November, the most active months are generally August and September. During this period thunderstorms are more frequent, the rains more abundant with the passage of more or less strong tropical waves and storms.
In conclusion, the weather is always pleasant in Las Terrenas, Las Galeras, Santa Barbara de Samana, more humid and rainy in the rainy season. However tourists are welcome all year round.
